PHOENIX — Eight hikers were treated by Phoenix fire crews after being attacked by a large swarm of bees on Camelback Mountain, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.
On Monday morning, around 9:15 a.m., the Phoenix Fire Department received reports that multiple hikers had been stung by a swarm of bees near the base of Cholla Trail.
The calls came from hikers at multiple locations across the mountain, so the Phoenix Fire Department upgraded the call to a “greater alarm mountain rescue.”
Fire crews were at both the Cholla and Echo Canyon trails to help any hikers who were stung. The Phoenix Police FireBird helicopter was also deployed to aid.
All eight hikers were located, treated and walked down the mountain. One hiker was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
The trails are currently closed and a bee specialist is headed to the area to assess.
