A crash on I-17 in Phoenix led to a death and serious injuries, hospitalizing four, as reported by Arizona DPS.
PHOENIX — A 9-year-old girl is dead and four other people have been hospitalized after a crash on Interstate 17 in Phoenix, Arizona DPS said.
On Sunday morning, troopers responded to a single-vehicle rollover crash on northbound I-17 at Peoria Avenue.
According to authorities, the crash resulted in the death of a 9-year-old girl and other serious injuries. The 9-year-old victim was reportedly sharing a seatbelt with a sibling when she was ejected during the crash, DPS said.
Four people were also taken to the hospital. Among those were a 1-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy and an 11-year-old boy. Officials said all the children were eventually treated and released.
The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 30-year-old Brenda Liliana Rivera Estrada of Phoenix. She is the mother of all occupants.
DPS said Rivera Estrada was released from the hospital and booked into the Maricopa County Jail. She is facing one count of manslaughter and four counts of child abuse.
During her initial court appearance, officials said witnesses reported seeing a motorist driving recklessly before the rollover crash. The state representative also said troopers reportedly detected the odor of marijuana from the vehicle.
Investigators believe Rivera Estrada may have been under the influence of marijuana.
The judge called this situation a “tragedy” and ordered Rivera Estrada not to drive with her surviving children if she bails out.
Rivera Estrada is being held on a $100,000 bond, officials said.
