Don’t let it break your brain, OK?
The first mock draft, conducted this time before the MLB offseason has technically even begun, is bedlam, always. Not everyone is as researched as everyone else, and draft rooms aren’t configured for the new season yet. Picks are unrehearsed and raw, with most people operating on gut instinct, so if you pulled up these results expecting to reason your way through them, let me stop you right now.
It’s not that kind of mock draft.
Most are meant to be informative, but this one is more formative, better used to explore broad themes than to nail down individual player values. If I pointed out every surprising thing that happened, this article would go on longer than anyone cares to read, so whether your objection is to Yoshinobu Yamamoto being drafted ahead of Chris Sale, Brent Rooker being drafted ahead of Marcell Ozuna, Shane McClanahan going 81 spots earlier than Sandy Alcantara or whatever else, understand that I see it too.
And in fairness to those who made those choices, the argument for them exists. Rather than fixating on a few isolated picks, though, I’d like to consider the aforementioned broader takeaways. For me, there are two.
The first is that shortstop is far and away the deepest position. Maybe outfield can rival it in leagues where everyone needs only three, but in a five-outfielder format like standard Rotisserie, shortstop pulls away. Case in point: For all the impact Xavier Edwards had as a batting average and stolen base specialist in the second half last year, there was simply no demand for him in this draft. I wound up taking him for my utility spot (i.e., my third shortstop) at 220th overall, about 100 spots lower than I’ve ranked him.
That’s the thing about rankings. They’re coordinated, presuming every team recognizes the same scarcities and surpluses and drafts accordingly. But real drafts aren’t like that. We would have basically had to coordinate our picks to ensure all the good shortstops were drafted — and it turns out not all of them were. Tyler Fitzgerald, another second-half standout who impressed with his home run and stolen base contributions, went undrafted. It’s unlikely to be him next time — one drafter told me he simply forgot about Fitzgerald and would have taken him over his actual middle infield option (such are the perils of an October draft) — but even with Fitzgerald left out, nobody was straining to fill a middle infield spot. Shoot, Brandon Lowe went undrafted, too.
My second broad takeaway is that there’s more than enough quality starting pitchers to go around in a league where every team figures to take between six and seven. It adds up to about 80 being drafted in all, and while you probably don’t want to live in the 60-80 range, there’s ample room for disagreement in the 15-50 range, as I recently pointed out in my starting pitcher rankings article. Another way of putting it is that there are about twice as many top-25 types as usual at starting pitcher.
Some went higher in this draft than I expected (Bryce Miller, Pablo Lopez). Some went lower (Shota Imanaga, Hunter Greene). But ideally, you wouldn’t develop personal favorites within that massive group and instead just take whatever falls to you, which is how I wound up with Bailey Ober in Round 11, Sonny Gray in Round 14, and Reynaldo Lopez in Round 17. Those are my 25th, 26th, and 40th-ranked starting pitchers, respectively.
A few more quick observations:
If you were counting on Junior Caminero and Jackson Holliday being post-hype sleepers, this draft would seem to indicate just the opposite, with Caminero being drafted 64th overall, between Josh Naylor and Riley Greene, and Holliday being drafted 80th overall, between Zac Gallen and Brenton Doyle. I’ve ranked them 123rd and 162nd in this format and think that’s closer to where they’ll actually go, but all it takes is one eager drafter to undermine the potential for value. For what it’s worth, Jasson Dominguez went 209th overall.
Nico Hoerner was my highest-ranked available player for about six rounds straight, finally going off the board at 200th overall. I presumed his elbow flexor surgery was to blame, seeing as he’s not certain to be ready for the start of next season, but several in the chat chimed in to tell me they were torn between him and some other middle infielder as many as 60 picks earlier, ultimately opting for the other. Once they filled the spot, there was no need to fill it again, and thus Hoerner’s slide began.
There may be another reason why Hoerner slid in this draft, particularly with the added context of Xavier Edwards also sliding to 220th. Both are players who stand out mostly for their stolen base contributions while offering little in the home run category, and it turns out that’s a pretty common profile later in drafts, with other examples including (but not limited to) Bryson Stott, Tommy Edman, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Maikel Garcia, Luis Rengifo, Anthony Volpe, Andres Gimenez, TJ Friedl and Victor Robles. Those in search of power were met with speed at every turn, which perhaps signals what your priority should be early in drafts.
