Ontario Premier Doug Ford publicly confirmed that he is calling an early election next Wednesday, saying he needs a mandate to fight against U.S. President Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs.

Speaking to reporters at an event in Brampton, Ont., northwest of Toronto, Mr. Ford definitively ended months of speculation, saying he was taking the province to the polls. It’s an election that is more than a year ahead of the next scheduled vote in June, 2026 – and that comes just two-and-a-half years after Mr. Ford won a majority in 2022.

“We will be calling the election next Wednesday. I’ll be seeing the Lieutanant-Governor on Tuesday. We need a mandate from the people to fight against Donald Trump’s tariffs,” Mr. Ford said.
