Local Man who was Educator Locally and Out of State for Nearly 40 Years, Dickie “Dick” Chipps, Passes


Mr. Dickie “Dick” Chipps, 81, a former resident of West Union, WV, more recently of Thomasville, NC, departed this life, Friday, February 28, 2025, at his home, with his loving family by his side.  Dick was born April 17, 1943 in Salem, WV.  He was the only child of the late Garland “Chippy” and Mary Snider Chipps. 


 

Dick graduated from Doddridge County High School in 1961.  He attended and graduated from Salem College in 1965.  His first teaching job was at Washington City Schools in Washington Court House, Ohio, teaching 8th grade English.  He also taught Jr. High School English and Social Studies in Piqua City Schools in Piqua, Ohio.  While teaching there, Dick obtained a Master’s Degree in Counseling from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.  His last year in Ohio was at Knox County Vocational School in Mount Vernon as a counselor.  He returned to West Virginia, where he was a counselor at both Salem and Bristol.  When Salem, Bristol and Victory High Schools consolidated into Liberty, he became the first counselor at United Technical Center in Clarksburg.  In 1980, he went to Doddridge County High School as a Vocational Counselor.  Dick received additional certifications from WVA and Marshall.  Before retiring with 37 years’ experience in Education, his last four years, he was Principal at Carr and Sedalia Grade Schools.  In the meantime, Dick received a Master’s Degree from Andersonville Theological School in Georgia.  He served 14 years as Pastor of Reynoldsville Christian Church.  He was a past member of the National Education Association, West Virginia Education Association, Doddridge County Education Association and both a member and President of Smithburg Fire Department.


 


Dick enjoyed going to church, camping, fishing, and coaching sports of all kinds.  He also enjoyed taking his 1954 Ford to car shows.  Dick enjoyed working with children and also preaching at the Genesis Nursing Home in Salem, WV.  He was a good friend of many residents of Doddridge and Harrison counties.  Dick was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him.


 


In addition to his parents, Dick is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Jim Richards and a sister-in-law, Betty Lykens.


 


Dick is survived by his wife, Sandra Richards Chipps, of the home, whom he married on April 16, 1965; two children, Pamela Jackson and husband Danny of Lancaster, KY and Steven Chipps and wife Kristie of Thomasville, NC; three grandchildren, Kelsey Stout-Prouty and Tyler Prouty of Lexington, KY, Richard “Thair” Stout, II and Holly Stevens of Lancaster, KY, Zacharia and Emily Chipps of Trinity, NC;  great-grandchildren, Elara Stout, Juniper Stout, Brenson Stout, Finn Prouty, Laklen Chipps, Oaklan Chipps, and 2 more great grandchildren on the way; a sister-in-law, Annabelle Richards of Salem WV; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces, and the many, many folks he called friends.


 


The family will greet friends at Hillside Park Baptist Church 7593 E. Holly Grove Road, Thomasville, NC on Monday, March 3, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  A visitation will be held Wednesday, March 5, 2025 from 4:00 PM -7:00 PM at Davis Funeral Home 212 Front St, West Union, WV 26456.  A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Davis Funeral Home 212 Front St, West Union, WV 26456 with Rev. Dr. Steven Chipps officiating. Burial will follow at K of P Cemetery in Salem, West Virginia. Online condolences can be made at www.davisfuneralhomewestunionwv.com.
