Learning more about ADOT’s Broadway Curve project

The 11-mile project through Phoenix has lasted years, but it’s still several months from being done despite previous plans for a late 2024 completion date.

PHOENIX — More than 300,000 vehicles travel daily through the Broadway Curve, and ADOT’s massive overhaul of the 11-mile stretch through Phoenix is still months from completion- even though it was supposed to be done last year.

“Everything will be all done and will be completed by this spring,” Marcy McMacken, an ADOT spokeswoman, said. “So, within the next couple of months, we will be done.”

The I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project runs along Interstate 10 between the Loop 202 and Interstate 17 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The project has widened I-10 to six lanes and two HOV lanes, and it added collector-distributor roads and widened and replaced several bridges.

The project has alleviated congestion and is expected to sustain future growth, but the price tag has significantly increased from initial estimates, 12News found.

And despite being months behind schedule, there are no plans to shut down the freeway for construction during spring training to speed things up. That’s because ADOT didn’t want to upset out-of-town tourists, McMacken said.

McMacken said prior flooding with the Salt River under the I-10 caused a four-month delay. She added that the state limits road closures on weekends, holidays, and other times.

“We did not schedule any freeway closures the last 3 1/2 years during the weekdays to minimize the impact on motorists,” she said.

Initially projected at $615 million when construction began in fall 2021, it’s now expected to cost around $832 million, according to state records.

ADOT said the new price includes making traffic lights at the interchanges smarter by adjusting signal timings based on traffic data.

There also are now installations of wrong-way detection systems, and there were land acquisition costs, according to McMacken.

The funding comes from the federal government and a half-cent sales tax approved by voters.

It is ADOT’s largest urban freeway reconstruction project.
