HYDERABAD
President of the National Backward Classes Welfare Association and Rajya Sabha member R. Krishnaiah has demanded that the Telangana government withdraw its plans to dispose of 400 acres of land at Kancha Gachibowli in the city which fall in the limits of University of Hyderabad (UoH) or else the student and BC bodies would launch a movement.
Speaking at a meeting of the Joint Action Committee of UoH Students here on Friday, he suggested the government should focus on people’s welfare and State’s development instead of indulging in the real estate business. He stated that government lands and assets should be used for public purposes such as construction of houses for the poor, government offices, schools and hostels and not for making money.
He sought to know what (lands) would be left for the needs of future generations if the small extent of lands available too were disposed of. Governments in the past too had resorted to such acts and they (BC bodies) had strongly opposed such moves and prevented sale of at least some parcels of land. He asked the government to stop the practice of sale or auction of lands.
If the students of UoH kept quiet now on Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s plans to dispose of 400 acres, they day would be not far away when he would resort to sale of 800 acres land in the Osmania University. He would take the matter to the Prime Minister’s notice and even raise the issue in Parliament, if the State government failed to take back its decision to sell 400 acres of land.
There were 295 BC welfare hostels in Telangana but no hostel has own building even 27 years after their commencement. Similarly 320 BC residential educational institutions too were being run in rented buildings. Some of such hostels and residential schools could be built in those lands too.
In case the government went ahead with its plans, they (BC bodies and students of UoH) would not allow the buyers to enter the land and they would also lay siege to the AICC office in New Delhi. President of the National BC Students’ Union Kiran Kumar Goud and UoH student leader participated.
