Dead dogs found in Gila Bend, suspect arrested

Some of the dogs had resorted to feeding on the remains of deceased dogs on the property, MCSO said.

GILA BEND, Ariz. — A suspect has been taken into custody after the remains of dead dogs were found on a property in Gila Bend.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a Gila Bend property on April 5 after a concerned citizen reported suspicions of animal neglect. Upon arrival, deputies allegedly found several animals living in poor conditions without proper access to food.

Some of the dogs had resorted to feeding on the remains of deceased dogs on the property, MCSO said.

John D. Jackson, 38, has been taken into custody and is facing criminal charges of animal cruelty for allegedly neglecting the canines.

MCSO officials said the nature of this case is “disgusting and deplorable.” In total, MCSO said detectives found seven puppies, 11 adult dogs and the remains of three dead dogs at the property.

The suspect was allegedly using social media platforms to sell dogs, the sheriff’s office said

“I am outraged by the unimaginable suffering these animals endured, and I assure the public that we will take swift and decisive action to seek justice,” Sheriff Jerry Sheridan said in a statement.

The surviving animals remain in the care of MCSO.
