Spring Garden basketball star, Alabama signee Ace Austin claims another national honor

The state’s first two-time Miss Basketball added another accolade to a stacked resume.

Spring Garden standout and Alabama signee Ace Austin was named MaxPreps’ Small Town National Player of the Year, the organization announced.

Athletes included for recognition on the team must compete at schools with an enrollment under 1,000 students that are in towns with a population of under 10,000.

Along with claiming Miss Basketball honors for her senior year, she also claimed state player of the year honors from Gatorade and MaxPreps for another standout season.

The four-time state champion averaged 26.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 4.2 steals per game as Spring Garden claimed its third straight Class 1A state title this season.

The Alabama signee finished her high school career with a historic 203-10 record on the court, ranked second in AHSAA history in career assists (1,429) and steals (863).

She signed with the Crimson Tide over offers that included Missouri, Marquette, Clemson, Wake Forest and Mississippi State.

Along with Austin claiming recognition, McIntosh star Chauncey Dixon claimed fourth-team honors on the Small Town All-America Team.

A Class 1A all-state first team selection, the 6-foot-2 center averaged 18.7 points, 14.8 rebounds, 4.4 steals and 3.3 assists per game for a McIntosh squad that advanced to the Class 1A state semifinals.

Dixon logged 28 points, 10 rebounds, 7 steals, 5 blocks and 4 assists in an overtime loss to Brilliant in the Class 1A state semifinals.
