Drunk driver sentenced for killing motorcyclist on I-10 in high-speed crash

The defendant drove impaired at a speed of about 125 mph along Interstate 10 at the time of the deadly crash.

PHOENIX — A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for causing a crash on Interstate 10 that killed a motorcyclist in 2024.

Andrew Ramirez-Perez was recently sentenced in Maricopa County after pleading guilty to the second-degree murder of Craig Cooper.

The fatal crash was reported on Sept. 22, 2024, near milepost 140 in the Phoenix area after Cooper, 42, was struck by a car traveling at an estimated speed of 125 mph in a 65-mph zone. He did not survive his injuries.

Cooper left behind a wife and two children.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said the driver, Ramirez-Perez, had an open container in his car and his blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit.
