French left to hold protests as new PM Michel Barnier takes office

French left-wing parties and student unions have called for protests across the country as the newly appointed Prime Minister Michel Barnier tackles his first challenge of forming a cabinet. Barnier’s nomination has come as a shock for many and a disappointment for the left-wing coalition, New Popular Front, which won the snap elections called for President Macron two months ago.
