Chelsea FC published a social media post on Wednesday celebrating one of its players scoring a goal in the World Cup.
Simple enough, right? Not so much.
The post published across multiple platforms celebrated a goal scored by Enzo Fernández. Fernández plays for Argentina. His goal was an equalizer that set the stage for Argentina’s 2-1 semifinal comeback win that eliminated England in the World Cup.

So, yeah. That apparently didn’t go over so well among Chelsea’s English fanbase.
Here’s a screenshot of the post that went up during Wednesday’s game and, per multiple media reports including the UK’s Daily Mail, was deleted sometime after England’s demise was secured.
The online backlash to the post was reportedly intense.
Making matters worse for Chelsea, Fernández may or may not want to continue to play for the club. Fernández said earlier this year that he would like to live in Madrid amid rumors linking him to Real Madrid.
This resulted in Chelsea handing him a two-game suspension. Fernández has a contract with Chelsea through 2032, and Real Madrid has denied in a statement engaging in talks with Fernández or having interest in the Argentinian midfielder.

But rumors persist that he wants out. And that, in addition to Fernández helping eliminate England’s beloved Three Lions is reason enough for Chelsea fans to not have wanted to see his face on social media Wednesday.
