Wimbledon 2026: Alexander Zverev defeats Jiri Lehecka after fourth-round match suspended due to curfew

Monday’s fourth-round match between No. 2 Alexander Zverev and No. 13 Jiri Lehecka didn’t finish as planned. Though the match was scheduled for Monday, it didn’t finish until Tuesday after it was suspended due to curfew at Wimbledon.

At the time of the suspension, Zverev held a solid lead. After winning the first two sets 6-4, 7-5, Zverev and Lehecka were tied 3-3 in the third set when the match was put on hold.

When it picked up Tuesday, it initially appeared as though Lehecka benefitted most from the time off. He managed to win three straight games to begin his day, taking the third set 6-3.

Zverev won the first game in the fourth set, but Lehecka proved he was going to make it tough. After trading games, the set eventually went to a tiebreak. There, Zverev was able to pull out the narrow win.

With the victory, he’ll move on to the quarterfinals, where he’ll face American Taylor Fritz on Wednesday.

Zverev’s match was originally held on centre court Monday, which has a strict cutoff of 11 p.m. local time. It wasn’t the first match to nearly run up against Wimbledon’s curfew. Sunday night’s women’s match featuring Coco Gauff went right up to the curfew before she clinched the match-winning point mere minutes before the deadline.

As Zverev finished off his fourth-round match Tuesday, some of his other competitors were finishing up their quarterfinals matches.

Before Zverev’s match resumed, Jannik Sinner defeated Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets to advance to the semifinals.
