Vietta Fleming Hawkins, 95, of Bridgeport, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at her residence. She was born in Flemington on July 19, 1930, a daughter of the late Georgia (Utterback) and Stanley Fleming.
Surviving is her daughter, Sandra Lynn Valdez and husband Mike of Galax, VA; and her son, Dr. Randall Hawkins and wife Jennifer of Point Pleasant, WV; four dearly beloved grandsons, Jonathan Hawkins; Christopher Hawkins; twins Trevor and Tate Hawkins; and step-grandsons, Justin and Christopher Valdez.
Vietta graduated from Flemington High School in 1948, and attended West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. She retired from Lowndes Bank after many years. In retirement, she was a water aerobics instructor at the YMCA and at The Spa. She was a member of Simpson Creek Baptist Church for 80-plus years, sang in the choir, and taught Junior Choir for years. She was Past-President of the Flemington Woman’s Club and Past-Matron of the Flemington Chapter 126 OES, and sang in the Grand Choir. She was also very dedicated to the Humane Society.
She said many times, her life was complete with dear friends and precious family. She had a great doctor, Dr. Michael Angotti, who kept her well into her late 90’s. Her caregivers, friends, and companions Lydia Garcia, Denise Francis, Gwen Murray, Jeannie Zannino and Rhonda Vincent, cared for her wonderfully and made it possible for her to live at home.
In lieu of flowers, Vietta requested memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice.
Friends were received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. A Graveside Service was held immediately following the visitation at Bridgeport Cemetery with Pastor Richard Settles presiding, and she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband Frank.
