After Auburn announced that head football head coach Hugh Freeze was diagnosed with prostate cancer in late February, his next steps in recovery are now reportedly clearer.
The 55-year-old head coach told ESPN’s Chris Low that he will wait to be re-examined in January rather than having surgery. It comes after the report said Freeze received, “some encouraging news recently from doctors that his rare form cancer was low aggressive.”
“I’m only 55. We’re a family of faith, and I just didn’t feel like it was time to rush into surgery,” Freeze told ESPN. “I’m at peace with it.”
Auburn announced on Feb. 28 that Freeze had been diagnosed with an early form of prostate cancer. The statement said that Freeze’s cancer was detected early, and the doctors advised that it is “very treatable and curable.”
It also clarified that Freeze will “continue his normal coaching duties and responsibilities, and with forthcoming proper treatment, is expected to make a full recovery.”
Auburn started spring practice on March 25 and will finish this week. It’s annual A-Day event won’t be a traditional spring game this year, but will feature a practice open to fans followed by an autograph session to finish the spring practice window.
A-Day will be on Saturday, April 12, and the practice will start at noon.
