Steve Watson resigned as acting superintendent of Cartwright School District, effective immediately.
PHOENIX — The Cartwright School District is searching for a new leader after Acting Superintendent Steve Watson announced his resignation during a governing board meeting on Wednesday night.
Watson is stepping down just over a year after taking over the role in February 2025. His resignation is effective immediately.
During the announcement, Watson highlighted several district accomplishments under his tenure, including balancing the budget and securing raises for teachers.
“It’s been great to be a part of this process,” Watson said. “I think this is a prime moment for me to step away. I just wanted to let the governing board know I tendered my resignation with the Human Resources Department today. It’s been an honor to serve with all five of you, and I appreciate the work we’ve been able to do together.”
His departure followed a short but eventful tenure. Watson oversaw the district’s transition back to a five-day school week in January. He also navigated the district through a crisis involving governing board members Lydia and Cassandra Hernandez, who were accused of bringing a box cutter to Maryvale High School just days after a student was stabbed to death.
Reaction to the news at the meeting was mixed. While some families in attendance last night applauded the announcement, most of the board remained quiet.
Governing Board President Lydia Hernandez complimented Watson following the announcement.
“Thank you so much for your work,” Hernandez said. “It’s very much appreciated. Thank you. Thank you for your service and your care for children.”
Victor Hugo Rodriguez with the Cartwright School District shared the following statement with 12News:
“During tonight’s Governing Board Meeting on April 8, 2026, Mr. Steve Watson, who has been serving as Acting Superintendent for Cartwright School District, formally submitted his resignation, effective immediately.
We thank Mr. Watson for his service and contributions to the district during his time in this role. The district remains committed to ensuring stability and continuity for our students, staff, and community as we move forward.
Additional information regarding interim leadership and next steps will be shared in the coming days.”
