The call came into the Harrison-Taylor 911 center in Bridgeport at 10:58 a.m.
Officials were alerted of smoke coming from an apartment complex situated at Bloomfield Lane. Bloomfield Lane is just off Joy Lane, which is off Route 131 near Ken Ganley Kia.
Crews were greeted with the apartment complex already being evacuated as well as smoke upon arrival but had difficulty locating where it was emanating from. Hart would confirm that it was the result of a defective heating unit inside the complex that eventually led to the final issue needing to be addressed – ventilating the structure after the defect was addressed.
Hart added that all the residents of the complex had evacuated before firefighters arrived.
Bridgeport Fire was joined by fire crews from Clarksburg, Anmoore, Nutter Fort and Shinnston. They all arrived as part of the mutual aid agreements in place.
