An Edmonton man who went into a jealous rage and killed a man he thought was flirting with his then-girlfriend over a decade ago was sentenced Wednesday to four years in prison.
Edward Steven Robinson pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter in the death of 31-year-old Ivan Stamp, whose body was found one year after his killing.
Court heard the then-23-year-old Robinson and his girlfriend were drinking with Stamp in May 2012 behind the Beth Israel Synagogue.
Robinson, believing Stamp was flirting with the woman, assaulted him and left him with a broken jaw, broken ribs, and cuts to his spleen and left kidney that caused him to bleed internally.
Stamp’s body was found in June 2013, but his death stayed a cold case until 2021, when a reopened investigation led to Robinson’s confession and arrest.
Court of King’s Bench Justice Kent Teskey says Robinson has a long history of using alcohol, crystal meth and crack cocaine, and is to get health, housing and income support upon release.
“The alternative is to impose a sentence that does nothing prospectively to assist the offender,” Teskey said in a written decision.
“Should the probation officer believe that they are unable to facilitate my order, they should have the order brought back before me to allow me to consider amending my conditions or alternatively, to consider relieving the offender from the obligations of my order.”
