Harris received more votes than Democratic alternatives would have despite loss: Survey

Vice President Harris received more votes for president than some Democratic alternatives would have, despite her loss, according to a new poll from SAY24 and YouGov.

The polling found 46 percent of registered voters saying the vice president received their vote, while 48 percent said the same of President-elect Trump.

In comparison, the poll found that when other possible Democratic candidates were put in a hypothetical presidential election with Trump, they also lost but by larger margins than the vice president.

President Biden, who stepped out of the race in late July following a rough debate performance against Trump, earned 41 percent support to the president-elect’s 50 percent. 

High-profile Democratic Govs. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania garnered 38 percent and 37 percent of the hypothetical vote, respectively, to Trump’s 48 percent and 44 percent.

Trump’s election victory and impending return to the White House has rattled Democrats, who also lost both the House and Senate to their Republican counterparts. There have been ongoing conversations in the party about what led to their struggles at the polls this year, with some centrists saying the party went too left and liberals saying it didn’t go left enough.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) suggested earlier this month that if Biden stepped away from his campaign earlier, her party may have held onto the White House.

“Had the president gotten out sooner, there may have been other candidates in the race,” Pelosi told The New York Times. “The anticipation was that, if the president were to step aside, that there would be an open primary.”

The SAY24 and YouGov poll took place from Nov. 6-12, featuring 5,473 people and a plus or minus 2.1 percentage point margin of error.
