Harrison County 4-H Members Compete in WV Beef Expo Stockman’s Contest

Six Harrison County 4-H’ers competed in the West Virginia Beef Expo Stockman’s Contest on April 11 at WVU Jackson’s Mill.


 

In the junior division (9-14 years old), the team of Jackson Burns, Tanner Burns, Alexis Dennison, and Creed Haddix finished 12th out of 19 teams. There were 99 junior individuals competing in the junior division. Jackson Burns placed 32nd, and Tanner Burns 39th.


 


In the senior division (14-18 years old), Carver Deaton finished in second place, and Emmy Haddix was 47th. There were 262 individuals competing in the senior division.  


 


During the Stockman’s Contest, participants identified retail cuts of meat, plants, breeds of beef, sheep, swine, and goats, completed a Quality Assurance station, and were tested on their beef industry knowledge. They also placed three classes of cattle based on conformation and grade feeder cattle.


 


The Harrison County 4-H Stockman’s team was coached by Jennifer Friend, WVU Harrison County Extension Agent, and assisted by Beth Skidmore, WVU Harrison County 4-H Program Assistant. The team and their coaches would like to thank the West Virginia McCray Cattle Company for hosting them for practice.
