Thomas Richard “Dick” Mason, of Clarksburg, West Virginia, passed away unexpectedly at his home on May 11, 2026.
After his service, Dick built a life centered around family, hard work, and helping others. While living in California, he worked as a truck driver before eventually owning and operating a family pizza business where his sons worked alongside him for many years.
More than any job or title, Dick’s true passion in life was helping young people. Through decades of involvement with the Boy Scouts and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, he became a mentor, role model, and steady source of encouragement to countless children and teenagers. Whether family or not, kids naturally gravitated toward him, and Dick never stopped trying to guide, encourage, and support them.
Following the loss of his wife Karen in 2013 and the earlier passing of his son Reid, Dick eventually returned home to West Virginia to be close to family once again. It was as though he had never left. Being surrounded by family brought him happiness and peace, and he especially treasured the time spent with his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He remained deeply involved in their lives and continued being the caring, dependable presence he had always been.
In 2025, Dick reunited with and married his high school sweetheart, Jean Casto Miller Mason. Together they shared a renewed happiness and companionship that meant the world to him during the later years of his life.
Above all else, Dick loved his family. He was proud of his son Brent and deeply loved his grandchildren, Joe and Phoebe, who remained very special to him despite the distance between West Virginia and California. His love for family was constant, steady, and deeply felt by those who knew him best.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Jefferson Mason Jr. and Dona Lou Downs Mason; his wife, Karen Ewing Mason; his son, Reid Mason; and his sister, Linda Lou Mason Ash.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Mason; his son, Brent Mason; grandson Joe Mason; granddaughter Phoebe Mason; and many extended family members and lifelong friends in both West Virginia and California.
In keeping with Dick’s wishes, there will be no traditional funeral service. He will be cremated in West Virginia, and his ashes will later be returned to California to be spread by his family in a meaningful location. A celebration of life may be announced at a later date.
Dick will be remembered for his service to his country, his devotion to children and family, his kind heart, and the lasting impact he made on the lives of so many people fortunate enough to know him.
