Hurricanes on the horizon? First outlook issued before 2025 season even begins

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will officially begin on June 1.

However, the National Hurricane Center is already keeping eyes on the Gulf, Caribbean and Atlantic.

The hurricane center began routine issuance of its Atlantic basin tropical weather outlooks on Thursday.

The good news is that there’s nothing to worry in the tropics about for at least the next seven days.

Going forward the hurricane center will issue and update tropical weather outlooks four times a day: 1 a.m., 7 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. CDT. A special advisory could also be issued if conditions warrant.

Those outlooks will highlight any areas that need to be watched for more development and the probability of those disturbances strengthening into tropical storms.

Here’s an example from November of 2024:

There are two different outlooks available on the hurricane center’s website. One is a two-day outlook and the other covers seven days.

The Atlantic hurricane season has the potential to again be busier than average.

One early forecast from Colorado State University, which has been issuing hurricane outlooks for four decades, suggests this season could also have an above-average number of tropical storms (17), hurricanes (9) and major hurricanes (4).

An average Atlantic hurricane season, based on the 1991-2020 period, typically has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger storms).

NOAA plans to issue its Atlantic hurricane season forecast on May 22.
