After winning the toss and opting to bat first, New Zealand set India a target of 252 in the 2025 Champions Trophy final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday (March 9). It is the third-highest first-innings total in the final of the tournament and India will have to contend with history to chase it down.
Before this match, the highest score chased in a Champions Trophy final was New Zealand scoring 265 to beat India by four wickets in the second edition in 2000, when the tournament was called ICC KnockOut. The second-best in the list is South Africa chasing 246 with four wickets to spare against the West Indies in the inaugural edition in 1998. No team has chased over 250 runs to win the title since it was renamed in 2002.
Apart from the 2017 edition, when Pakistan scored 338/4 in the first innings against India, no team has scored over 300 runs in a Champions Trophy final. The matches in the tournament have often been low-scoring, while on some occasions, like 2002, 2006, and 2013, rain has marred potentially high-scoring games.
India could stop the Black Caps to 251/7 on the slow, turning Dubai pitch riding on a spinners-led excellent showing with the ball. Varun Chakaravarthy got the first wicket, of opener Will Young, in the eighth over before Kuldeep Yadav struck in quick succession to get Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson.
Ravindra Jadeja and Chakaravarthy took out Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips in the middle-overs, even as Daryl Mitchell hung around on the other end for his 63 (101). A good couple of cameos from Michael Bracewell and and Glenn Phillips helped the Kiwis go past the par score.
