Isolated severe storms possible in south Alabama today

Isolated severe storms will be possible in parts of south Alabama on Saturday, according to forecasters.

The best chance for stronger storms will be along the coast, but inland areas could also see rain and thunder.

The strongest storms could contain hail and damaging winds. The tornado threat is low but not zero, and forecasters think it will be mainly along and south of Interstate 10.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center is maintaining a Level 1 out of 5 (marginal) risk for severe weather today for south Alabama, including Mobile, Greenville and Dothan.

A Level 1 risk means isolated severe storms will be possible.

The rest of Alabama could get some rain later tonight and possibly a thunderstorm, but no severe weather is expected.

The National Weather Service in Mobile will be watching a cold front approach from the northwest and a developing area of low pressure close to the coast. The area of low pressure is expected to stay close to the coast or out over the Gulf, and the best chances for severe storms will exist along and south of its path.

There could still be storms north of that, but forecasters think the threat for a tornado will likely not be very high with those. They still could produce damaging winds and hail, however.

The most likely time for stronger storms will start later this afternoon and last into the evening hours.

Rain will continue to be possible tonight and through Sunday until the cold front passes through the region, according to the weather service.

Drier weather is expected Monday and Tuesday, but the next chance for rain will arrive likely on Thursday. As of Saturday morning no severe weather is expected with the mid-week system.
