Kitten rescued from landfill fire in Surprise

The cat was found and rescued by firefighters fighting a landfill fire in Surprise.

SURPRISE, Ariz. — A kitten was rescued from a landfill fire in Surprise on Friday.

One of the City of Surprise Fire & Medical Department crews working on the fire found the cat inside debris during the initial stages of the fire, officials said.

The crew coordinated to get the cat back to a fire station. A firefighter’s girlfriend is now caring for the cat, officials said. Fire officials said they hope they have an update on the condition of the kitten in the next day.

Crews responded to the area of Deer Valley Road and 195th Avenue Friday afternoon for reports of the large fire, according to officials with the City of Surprise.

Because of how deeply the fire is burning and the variety of materials, it is expected to take some time to fully extinguish.

Smoke may be visible through the weekend.
