Both the House and Senate return to session Tuesday. And there’s plenty to keep lawmakers busy.
President-elect Trump is testing the loyalty of Republican senators by pushing an array of controversial nominees to key positions, putting enormous pressure on GOP senators. Those nominees include Trump’s pick for secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) to serve as director of national intelligence, Russell Vought to head the Office of Management and Budget, Kash Patel to lead the FBI, Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Ore.) to head the Labor Department, and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
Meanwhile, Congress has just 10 days until government funding is set to run out and both sides still don’t have a deal to keep the lights on during the holidays. Members on both sides expect the government will stay open past the Dec. 20 shutdown deadline. But negotiators are keeping their colleagues guessing around how as funding talks enter a critical stretch amid questions about disaster relief.
