One Dead after Area Crash; Driver Alleged to be High


According to WDTV, one man is dead and one woman was seriously injured after a crash in Buckhannon on April 7.


 

Police say Matthew Whitehead was driving while high on medical marijuana before crashing into a sedan at the intersection of Highway 33 and Kesling Mill Road.


 


When officers arrived, they say Whitehead had bloodshot eyes and a flushed face. According to the criminal complaint, he told police he had been smoking medical marijuana and had “felt like driving reckless.”


 


The driver of the sedan was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown with serious injuries.


 


The passenger, Kenneth Wright, was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.


 


Officers found a glass smoking device and a grinder with marijuana leaves in Whitehead’s car after the crash. According to a criminal complaint, police had been notified of Whitehead’s reckless driving from another caller just moments before the fatal crash.


 


Whitehead is charged with one count of DUI Causing Death, and one count of DUI Causing Serious Bodily Injury.


 


He is being held at Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $150,000 cash-only bond.
