One person dead after avalanche near Lake Louise Ski Resort

One person is dead after an avalanche near the Lake Louise Ski Resort in Alberta, according to RCMP.

Mounties have yet to notify next of kin. The police service did not provide any additional details, including name, age or gender.

RCMP Const. Julie-Ann Strilaiff said all other guests at the resort have been accounted for and the ski resort has been closed.

Police said they were called to the scene at approximately 3:45 p.m.

“RCMP are asking for the public to follow instructions from all first responders and staff of the resort, and to have patience while we make all efforts to locate and rescue anyone in need,” said a Friday statement.

RCMP worked with search and rescue teams, the local fire department, emergency response services, Parks Canada and air ambulance to locate guests of the Lake Louise Ski Resort. The investigation is ongoing.

Members of the public were asked to report any sightings of people stranded in the area and to notify the RCMP if there were any people who should be at the resort, but who have not checked in with friends or family.
