Rs 2,000 crore plan for weather forecast system gets Cabinet approval | India News

NEW DELHI: Cabinet on Wednesday approved ‘Mission Mausam‘ with an outlay of Rs 2,000 crore over two years to create a more robust forecasting system for extreme weather events and tackling impact of climate change. This will also be used for issuing air pollution alerts across the country.
Critical elements of the Mission will include deployment of next-generation radars and satellite systems with advanced sensors and high-performance supercomputers, development of improved earth system models and a GIS-based automated Decision Support System for real-time data dissemination.
“By integrating advanced observation systems, high-performance computing, and cutting-edge technologies , Mission Mausam will set a new benchmark for predicting weather with high precision,” said a govt statement.
The move of will also help in better urban planning, environmental monitoring and operations of shipping, road and rail transport.
