On August 24, 1991, the Ukrainian parliament, the Rada, voted for independence, an approval that was confirmed in a referendum months later by an overwhelming majority of Ukrainians. For a while, there was a debate on whether Independence Day should be marked on the date of the referendum or the parliamentary vote.
