Steve Smith surprised the cricket world hours after Australia lost in the semifinal of the Champions Trophy to India in Dubai. Smith, one of the finest batters of modern era, announced he’s retiring from ODI cricket.

Smith retires with 170 appearances in ODIs for Australia in which he scored 5800 runs – the 12th highest tally by an Australian in men’s ODIs.

“It’s time to close the chapter on my ODI career. It’s been such a pleasure wearing the canary yellow and super proud to have been part of 2 World Cup winning teams along the way. Thanks to everyone for all of the support, It’s been one hell of a ride,” Smith wrote on Instagram.

A clip is doing the rounds on social media which has convinced users that India batting superstar Virat Kohli knew about Smith’s retirement before the Australian made it official.

The clip shows Kohli greeting Smith while enquiring if he has played his last ODI with the Australian replying in positive.

Smith captained Australia in 64 ODIs and won 32 of them while losing 24 and four ending in a no result. He struck 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries besides picking up 28 wickets with his legspin bowling.

Alongside legendary Ricky Ponting, Smith holds the record for the highest individual score – 164 – by an Australian captain in ODIs.

The 35-year-old was part of Australian teams that won the ODI World Cup titles in 2015 (Australia) and 2023 (India).

“There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey. Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup so it feels like the right time to make way,” Smith said in a release.

Smith will remain available for Tests and T20Is.

“Test cricket remains a priority and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies in the winter and then England at home. I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage,” he said.
