Storms in Arkansas could produce hail on Thursday

A cold front making its way through parts of Arkansas on Thursday could trigger scattered to spotty showers and storms and even possible hail.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A cold front will dive into parts of Arkansas on Thursday, triggering scattered to spotty showers and storms.

As the storms roll in, some could be strong to severe, and the potential for hail in the forecast for some parts of the state cannot be ruled out.

What should I expect?

Thursday morning will begin with a mix of sun and clouds.

However, as temperatures rise into the upper 70s and low 80s through the afternoon, this will fuel the chance of scattered storms bubbling up ahead of the cold front.

The storm prediction center has placed Little Rock and areas to the east under a slight risk of severe weather. The rest of the area is under a marginal risk or level one out of five for severe weather.

How will this impact me?

Expect the atmosphere to begin cooking up a few storms between the hours of 2:00  p.m. through 8:00 p.m.

The main threat of these storms will be large hail of about a quarter to golf ball size.

A lower threat for any storm that can reach its maximum strength is damaging winds of 60 to 70 mph. The threat of a tornado is slim, but a quick EF-0 or EF-1 tornado can’t be ruled out.

Remember, any storm can produce a deadly lightning strike.

If you hear thunder when outside, then you should get to a safe place immediately. Lightning can travel several miles away from the center of the storm. A deadly lightning strike can happen before the storm and rain arrive, and after the storm or rain ends.

How can I stay safe?

Make sure to have several ways of receiving warning notifications. A severe thunderstorm watch may be issued for Thursday afternoon.
