FROM THE PARKERSBURG POLICE DEPARTMENT

On Saturday, May 16, 2026, at approximately 9:48 p.m., Officers with the Parkersburg Police Department responded to an apartment in the 3400 block of 25th Street in reference to an unknown problem.

While on scene, officers made contact with an individual inside the residence who produced a firearm and began firing rounds at responding officers. Deputies from the Wood County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist the Parkersburg Police Department, including deployment of the Sheriff’s Office armored vehicle.

The subject continued to exchange gunfire with officers and deputies and was ultimately fatally wounded during the incident.

Following the exchange, law enforcement personnel entered the apartment and located a second deceased individual inside the residence.

At this time, investigators believe that individual was deceased prior to officers’ initial contact with the armed subject.

The West Virginia State Police has assumed responsibility for the investigation into the incident in its entirety. As is standard protocol, one deputy with the Wood County Sheriff’s Office and one officer with the Parkersburg Police Department have been placed on administrative duty pending completion of the internal review process.
