Homeowners can save hundreds of pounds a year by making one change to their properties, an expert says. Home experts at contractor firm SimplyEasy Refurbs have revealed a number of methods to bring down costs.
Among them is topping up your loft insulation, which the firm says can have a significant impact. It works by trapping warm air inside the home and preventing it from “rising through the roof”, loft services firm The Loft Boys explains on its website. According to an annual report by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero published in March, an estimated “15.2 million properties in Great Britain had cavity wall insulation (71% of properties with a cavity wall)” at the end of 2024, while “17.5 million had loft insulation (67% of properties with a loft) and 876,000 had solid wall insulation (10% of properties with solid wall)”.
It suggests many more properties could benefit from improving their homes’ energy efficiency by using insulation to keep homes warmer in the winer and cooler in summer.
Simply Easy refurbs says installation is often a one-time job that could see save you as much as £400 a year from your bills.
“Many homes are still under-insulated,” say the company says, adding that spring “is a perfect time to fix it before next winter”.
According to Checkatrade, a website that connects homeowners with trusted tradespeople, costs of insulating a loft in the UK range “from around £654 for a terraced property up to around £1,206 for a detached house”.
It suggests people should expect prices of around £10 per m² for quilt insulation, rising to “around £37 per m² for spray foam insulation”, whilst also noting that labour costs may be around £250 per day.
In April, Energy prices rose by 6% for a typical family, with many Britons already struggling amid high living costs.
Energy switching service Switcheroo said that customers should act now to avoid hefty price rises and could even save as much as £366 per year on energy bills by using an energy switching service to move to a cheaper tariff, the Edinburgh Evening News reports.
Explaining more about the process, the Money Saving Expert website stated: “Traditionally, switching your energy deal was the best way to cut bills, but with the recent energy crisis, savings aren’t anywhere near what they used to be.
“Yet deals are returning, and for some, it could now be worth considering switching. There are fixed deals right now priced below the current Price Cap level. So it’s possible to save by switching.”
