Thousands of citations issued in first month of Phoenix speed cameras being turned on

Since the warning period ended, Phoenix’s speed cameras have issued thousands of citations to drivers caught speeding.

PHOENIX — It’s been more than a month since Phoenix’s new speed cameras have started issuing tickets and city officials have disclosed how many have already been sent out.

On March 25, the warning period for the city’s 17 photo safety cameras officially ended, meaning drivers would now be subjected to a possible citation if they were caught speeding.

Since the cameras went live, more than 7,900 citations have been issued to motorists captured by one of the traffic devices for allegedly exceeding the posted speed limit. Fines associated with traffic citations are processed through the Phoenix Municipal Court.

During the initial 30-day warning period, the city reported 70,000 speeding events captured by photo cameras.

Since the cameras started operating, Phoenix police have received reports of scammers attempting to trick residents into believing they had been issued a citation.

The police department has emphasized that officers won’t contact individuals by phone, text or email about violations issued by the photo cameras. Actual citations are issued only by mail from the city court.

City officials have said the new network of speed cameras is part of an ongoing initiative to change dangerous driving behaviors and reduce traffic fatalities on Phoenix’s roads.

The locations of the speed cameras are subject to change. A map of current locations can be found here.
