The university announced on April 24 that it will no longer be offering a men’s or women’s tennis program at the end of the spring 2026 season.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas announced that it will discontinue its men’s and women’s tennis programs at the end of the 2026 spring season.
In an April 24 press release, Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Hunter Yurachek said that the decision stemmed from the inability to provide proper funding to compete in the Southeastern Conference and nationally.
“After considerable reflection and thoughtful discussion, we have made the very difficult decision to discontinue our men’s and women’s tennis programs,” Yurachek said. “We understand the disappointment and emotion this news will bring to many. Ultimately, we concluded that we are unable to provide the level of support necessary for our tennis programs to consistently compete in the SEC and nationally at the standard our student-athletes, coaches, alumni and supporters deserve.”
The decision came as a recommendation from Yurachek that was approved by the Chancellor, as well as the University System President and Board of Trustees.
According to the release, the $2.5 million combined budget will be reinvested broadly across the Department of Athletics.
Current tennis student-athletes who decide to remain with the university will have their scholarships honored through the completion of their current degree programs. Those wishing to transfer will be assisted by the Department of Athletics.
Various services, such as academic, training, mental health, and nutrition support, will also still be available to student-athletes.
The men’s team currently sits at a 16-13 overall and 3-11 record in the SEC for the 2025-26 season. The women’s team is 14-14 overall and 3-12 in the SEC. Both programs will finish out the season in May.
