AMRITSAR: There has been commotion at Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport since morning, where 205 Indians who had entered the United States illegally are returning to India today.
Strict security measures have been implemented on routes leading to the Sri a Guru Ramdas Ji International airport and the Air Force base, with Punjab Police and CISF personnel deployed to maintain order.
Reports indicate that the administration has arranged buses and other vehicles within the airport premises to facilitate the transportation of deported individuals to their respective homes.
A notable development is the expected arrival of a US military aircraft, C-17, at Amritsar Airport. While officials remain tight-lipped about the exact schedule and the number of deportees on board, unconfirmed reports suggest that 205 individuals are being repatriated via the US aircraft.
A message circulating among media personnel indicates that among the deportees, 33 are from Haryana and Gujarat, 30 from Punjab, and others from various states, bringing the total to 104 individuals arriving in Amritsar. They include size from Kapurthala, five from Amritsar, four each from Jalandhar and Patiala, two each from Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana and SBS Nagar, besides one each from Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Sangrur, Mohali and Fatehgarh Sahib.
The flight departed from San Antonio and is expected to land in Amritsar around 1.30pm at the Air Force base.
According to the airport authorities, the deportees were to earlier arrive on Tuesday evening but the schedule we as later revised.
Security officials have confirmed that a list of arriving individuals has been received. Preliminary verification has found no notorious criminals among them, said sources .
No relative of the deportees is seen at the airport and it is believe that police have restricted their movement.
It is learnt that the deported Indians will be allowed to exit after immigration and customs procedures and they will be handed over to Punjab Police for further movement to their respective native places.
Punjab minister for NRI affairs Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal has, meanwhile, expressed dismay over the decision of US govt to deport the Punjabis living there without proper documentation.
