The child stabbed to death in a home in Venlo’s Blerick district on Monday morning is a 14-year-old girl called Nour, locals told L1. The police arrested the two adult residents of the home, a man and a woman. According to RTL Nieuws, the suspects are Nour’s parents.
The emergency services responded to the home on Elzenstraat at around 6:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a stabbing. The emergency room dispatched police, paramedics, and an air ambulance.
First responders tried “with all their might” to save the child’s life, but it was to no avail, a police spokesperson told the media.
The authorities have not confirmed the identity of the child or suspects, nor their relationship. The police only reported that they arrested the residents of the home, a man and a woman.
A neighbor described Nour as a “very nice girl,” speaking to L1.
“I am always up early,” a local told RTL Nieuws. “I saw a lot of police and a trauma helicopter.” She later learned that the girl had been killed. The girl sometimes played with her own granddaughter, she said. “They are very decent parents. They always offered to help. I never expected this from them.”
Another neighbor told the broadcaster that Nour also has an older sister. It is unclear whether she was home this morning or where she is now.
Nour attended Blaricum College. A spokesperson for the secondary school told L1 that classes are continuing today. “But in a different form. This is naturally a topic of discussion, so we are reflectin gon it. Students know each other well, so if children feel the need to go home, they can. However, only under the supervision of their parents.”
The school is setting up a memorial site, another spokesperson told RTL. “That will be a classroom where students and teachers are given space,” she said. “You have to give students who knew her well plenty of space.” She called what happened “so incredibly sad.”
