West Valley teen attacked by group of young adults at Lake Pleasant

The 16-year-old was kicked and punched repeatedly by a group of teens at Lake Pleasant. The attack was caught on camera.

PEORIA, Ariz. — A West Valley teen is recovering from his injuries after being attacked by multiple other teens at Lake Pleasant.

In an exclusive interview, 12News spoke with the 16-year-old from the West Valley and his mom, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation.

The teen was attending a bonfire with friends at Lake Pleasant on April 18. He originally planned to go camping with friends, but the small bonfire grew into a large party. He was later pulled out of a car he had been sitting in by a group of teens or young adults he did not know.

The group told him to get out of the car and then forcibly removed him. Then the teens began kicking and punching him repeatedly, yelling racial slurs, all while the 16-year-old was lying on the ground and shielding his head and face.

In a video obtained by 12News, female voices can be heard in the background, egging on the teens attacking the 16-year-old. After about a minute — with nearly 20 people watching the attack unfold, the 16-year-old says — the teens attacking him leave, and he manages to call his mom.

“At that point, I thought I was listening to my son die. It, you know, I didn’t know the extent of the injuries,” the 16-year-old’s mom said. “He just said, ‘I’m bleeding out. I can’t stop bleeding, Mom. I need help. I need help.’”

The 16-year-old went to the hospital, where he discovered he had a broken nose. But the doctors said his injuries could have been much worse.

The Peoria Police Department is investigating this assault case and has already made one arrest: a 17-year-old boy who was arrested and is facing a long list of charges, including two counts of aggravated assault, unlawful imprisonment, and threatening and intimidating.
