What roads are closed due to weather in Arizona?

Two sections of I-40 are closed in northern Arizona and State Route 89A has reopened.

PHOENIX — If you’re trying to take advantage of the winter weather hitting Arizona, check the roads first: a major freeway is closed in multiple places because of multiple vehicle slide-offs

The Arizona Department of Transportation said eastbound Interstate 40 near Kingman and Ash Fork has closed due to the winter weather and cars sliding off the freeway. Drivers headed east will be detoured onto southbound US 93, exiting I-40 at milepost 72, and will travel toward the Phoenix area.

The westbound lanes of I-40 are closed in Winslow to help officials clear a traffic jam. ADOT says there is currently a traffic jam that is more than 15 miles long near Williams, which was caused by multiple vehicles sliding off the freeway and crashes that blocked lanes as winter storms hit the area.

Drivers should find alternate routes if they plan to drive west out of Flagstaff on I-40. ADOT is advising drivers to go south on I-17 and then go west through Prescott, Wickenburg or Phoenix to reach their ultimate destinations.

ADOT has also announced that the southbound lanes of State Route 87, also known as the Beeline Highway, is closed at milepost 238, about 12 miles south of Payson, due to winter weather.

Interstate 17 southbound at Munds Park, milepost 323, was closed Friday afternoon and has since reopened. Drivers should still expect delays on I-17.

In addition to I-17, both directions of State Route 89A have reopened between Sedona and the I-17 interchange, which is mileposts 379-397.

State Route 89A allows drivers to travel from Sedona to Flagstaff, and I-17 is the most direct way for Valley drivers to get to Flagstaff.

ADOT advises drivers to delay travel until the winter storm passes. If you do choose to travel during the winter weather, make sure to be prepared to spend more time on the road than normal.

ADOT snowplows are also working to clear roadways. Drivers should ensure at least four car-lengths between a snowplow and their car and drivers should not pass a snowplow.
