The Mesa Police Department said in a news release that they saw a man riding a bicycle without a bicycle light in the area of Dobson Road and University Drive around 8:30 p.m. on April 4. Officers tried to stop the man, but he allegedly ignored them and fled.
Eventually, officers were able to contact the man, but according to police, he resisted arrest and assaulted officers. After a “brief struggle,” the man was handcuffed and arrested, facing a charge for aggravated assault on a police officer and an active felony warrant.
The Mesa Fire Department was called to the scene to provide medical aid before the man was taken to the hospital to receive a pre-booking medical clearance.
While he was being taken to the hospital, the man became unresponsive, police said, and despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The cause of death has not been released and will be determined by the Office of the Medical Examiner.
The man’s identity has also not been released, police said, pending next of kin notification.
No other details were released.
